Sabak Bernam Mangrove

Sabak Bernam Mangrove is used to be an area of fishing activities supporting the livelihood of local communities and it serves as an important riparian buffer zone. It is now a desolated area due to unsustainable construction of aquaculture farms which has been abandoned. This had resulted in degraded water resources and diminished its values for the local community.

Sabak Bernam Mangrove Rehabilitation Programme
A collaborative efforts by Global Environment Centre, Sabak Bernam District office (PTDSB), Selangor State Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS), Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS), Selangor State Forestry Department (JPNS), Sabak Bernam District Council and the local community to rehabilitate 8 hectares of Sabak Bernam Mangrove. This programme is financially aided by the Global Environment Facility-Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP) Malaysia.

The programme includes rehabilitating and improving the degraded belt of the mangrove area along Bernam River, promote cost –effective mangrove rehabilitation through community based mangrove action project and ameliorating the understanding of the general public and school children on mangrove ecosystems.
