The products come in the form of attractive handicrafts made of driftwood (peat tree stumps), rattan, bamboo and pandanus leaves. Director of the Selangor State Forestry Department, Dr. Mohd Puat Bin Dahalan will be present to officiate the WWD 15 celebration. The event is sponsored by HSBC Bank Malaysia2 and co-supported by the SEApeat Project, Nets Print Group Sdn. Bhd., and 99Speedmart Sdn. Bhd.

The event will introduce variety of peatland’s non-timber forest products made by the local community called Friends of North Selangor Peat Swamp Forest (@ Sahabat Hutan Gambut Selangor Utara (SHGSU)) and to create awareness amongst the public on the importance of forest products in conservation and local community socio-economic development. This is in line with World Wetlands Day 2015 theme “Wetlands for Our Future” that seeks to highlight the variety of ways wetlands are providing and many ways that the public can contribute to their conservation and restoration.

During the event, tree-planting will also be carried out. 1,200 trees will be planted over 2 hectares of the degraded peatland area. The celebration is expected to be attended by more than 300 people including volunteers, local communities from SHGSU and Peatland Forest Ranger groups, government agencies, corporate sponsors and the general public.
