Event Title: For Peat Sake, Make a Change. RMFR Tree Planting
07-Nov-2015 to 07-Nov-2015 Past Event
Venue: North Selangor Pear Swamp Forest, Kuala Selangor, Selangor
Organizer: Selangor State Government, Selangor State Forestry Dept, GEC

Peatland ecosystems play a global importance for its role in maintaining biodiversity conservation and as huge carbon sink and preventing global warming. In Southeast Asia, peatland degradation and fires has release up to 2 billion tonnes of CO2/year more than the combined GHG emissions of UK, France and Germany.

In Malaysia, Global Environment Centre is working with Selangor State Forestry Department to address peatland degradation in Raja Musa Forest Reserve by implementing rehabilitation and integrated management of peat swamp forest. The Rehabilitation Programme aims to rehabilitate the 1,000 ha of degraded areas within the forest reserve through community participation. Among others the programme focuses on supporting the implementation of Integrated Management Plan for the forest, implementing a community based rehabilitation program and establishment of a community-based fire prevention and control management.

In the run-up to UNFCCC COP21 Paris, GEC and Selangor State Forestry Department will be organising a peat reforestation activity at Raja Musa Forest Reserve on November 7, 2015. Our ambition is to plant 1000 number of peat saplings at the forest degraded area. Come and join us!
