In Selangor, these are centered around the Klang Islands, Tanjung Karang and Sabak Bernam areas. The mangroves have suffered a great deal as they have been cleared and sidestepped to make way for development and expansion. An important function of a mangrove forest is to provide coastal protection. During the 2004 Tsunami, the mangrove forests played a crucial role in protecting coastal communities from being dragged away into the open sea. This tree planting session is an effort to enrich the existing Teluk Gong Mangrove Forest, which is a forest reserve area. The species of mangrove that will be planted are the bakau minyak and bakau kurap. These trees are actually being grown in Kampung Perajurit, the local village in which the Mangrove forest is located. A local community member is spearheading this effort.
