Sg. Buloh, 21 January 2011 (Friday) - The 99Speedmart mini market chains, presented a donation of RM30,000 to Global Environment Centre (GEC), a non-profit organisation to support GEC’s environmental efforts and initiatives. Present that morning to hand over the cheque was its General Manager, Mr. Quek Teng Hiong witnessed by YB Elizabeth Wong, the EXCO for Tourism, Consumer Affairs and Environment, Selangor State Government.
The funds were collected through the sales of 99 Speedmart plastic bags to its customers during the “No Plastic Bag Day Campaign” that have been implemented by the management on every Saturdays throughout its 200 over outlets. This is in support of the Selangor State government initiative of the ‘No Plastic Bag Campaign’ since it was launched in 2010. Mr. Quek quoted “It is our way to convey to the public that it is important to save the environment by reducing the use of plastic bag. It also shows our commitments to ensure that all proceeds will go towards protecting the planet for future generations.”

“We are much honored to be the recipient of the funds and commended 99 Speedmart for supporting the “No Plastic Bag Campaign” that has now been extended towards giving back to the environment via this donation,” said Mr. Chee Tong Yiew, the Manager of Global Environment Centre who was there to receive the cheque. According to Mr. Chee, the funds will be used by GEC to support its environmental awareness activities such as the ongoing river care programme for schools, e.g. facilitation of River Rangerswater monitoring activities and recycling activity  and community mangrove rehabilitation and protection in Klang Mangroves. He urged more private sectors to follow the footsteps of 99 Speedmart in supporting the work of local environmental NGOs.
