A TOTAL of RM31,931 was raised at the 2013 Setia Eco Walkathon and the amount was donated to the Global Environment Centre (GEC), a non-profit organisation.
The amount was collected from the participation fees of RM18 (adults) and RM13 (children).
The walkathon, with the tagline “Setia Eco Walkathon — Walking is Loving our Planet”, was held in conjunction with this year’s World Environment Day.
As part of its continued commitment to raise environmental awareness, SP Setia organised multiple events at its townships located in Setia Alam, Shah Alam; Setia Eco Cascadia, Johor and Setia Pearl Island, Penang, attracting more than 4,000 people.
Through these walks, the developer aims to engage actively with the communities and promote sustainable living.
In line with the “Eco” theme, residents and the public were joined by SP Setia’s staff and senior management as they all walked together to show their support for Mother Earth.
At Setia City Park in Setia Alam, a total of 2,000 participants took part and walked a 5km route.
The haze was not a deterrent and some even came with their family in tow.
Some dressed up as Superman, Spiderman and the Incredible Hulk, attracting participants to pose for photos with them.
Mickey Mites cheerleaders from SM Damansara Jaya cheered on participants with motivational boards carrying eco-friendly messages.
Aside from goodie bags, there were also breakfast and lucky draws after the walkathon.
Twin sisters Lim Mei Ying and Lim Mei Mei, 28, drove from Petaling Jaya to show their support for the event.
“We always support eco-friendly events and runs. We were also keen to check out Setia Alam. The earth is sick and we should do our part,” Mei Ying said, adding that they sorted out their waste at home.
SP Setia Berhad president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin said: “Walking is a great way to enjoy nature’s beauty, get some exercise and mingle with friends and family while observing World Environment Day.”
