Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve Fire Prevention Initiatives

Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve is a 960 ha area of peat swamp forest. It supports the conservation of rare species of flora and fauna and has significant importance to local community and indigenous that have loved in the area and harvested its resources for many years. Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve is a forest reserve has been coming under increasing pressure by its surrounding development and large portions have been impacted by fire in recent years.  This had led the area susceptible to peat fires and oxidization; indirectly contribute to carbon emission and global warming. In 2014, more than 350 ha of the forest got burnt during the dry season.

Target Groups: Local community, Orang Asli

Aims/Objectives:

  • To reduce the risk of fires in and adjacent to the Kuala Langat North Peat Swamp Forest in the 2015 dry season (August-November)

Project Achievements

  • Development and distribution of fire prevention materials (posters, brochures, etc.)
  • Organised meetings with indigenous communities (21 indigenous community members from three different villages) on the importance of protecting the forest and measures to prevent and control the peat fires
  • Organised meetings with landowners and officials to enhance collaboration and awareness about peat land fire prevention activiites in KLNFR
  • Designed and installed Fire Danger Rating System (FDRS) as an early warning system to monitor the are and time whrn the fire index indicates moderate, high or extreme levels.
  • Trained the local communities in fire patrolling and prevention measures.
  • Organised a two-day workshop for the indigenous communities and landowners to enhance the understanding of stakeholders on peat swamp forest, biodiversity conservation, fire prevention and control measures.
