River Care

Global Environment Centre River Care Programme manager Dr Kalithasan Kailasam said the success, achieved via strict enforcement and continuous efforts to rehabilitate the river, proved that it could be done.

Public parks, community gardens and colourful murals are just some of the ways Sungai Klang and Sungai Gombak have been transformed through the River of Life outreach programme, which has helped educate the people on the importance of preserving our waterways.

Since 2018, FoSK TMR3 has carried out the longest continuous community gotong-royong in Malaysia, currently at 107 weeks and counting. Each Saturday, members and participants show up at the riverbank to carry out any task needed.

From a childhood spent around Malaysia’s Linggi River, Dr. Kalithasan Kailasam developed a deep passion and respect for rivers, the oceans, and the systems that feed them and live from them. Dana Penjagaan Sungai Kebangsaan merupakan inisiatif yang ditubuhkan dan dibiayai sepenuhnya oleh Global Environment Centre (GEC) berperanan menyokong organisasi tempatan dan pertubuhan tidak berkepentingan untuk meneruskan aktiviti / projek mereka bagi memastikan sungai terus terpelihara.

The Mutiara Magna Community Garden in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur has been considered a ‘lifesaver’ as it provides fresh produce from pegaga to bok choy to this vulnerable group in the community.
