Community-based River Conservation Programme: Sg Kayu Ara River Protection Project

The Sungai Kayu Ara catchment area, located within the district of Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, originates from the forested hills of Bukit Lanjan and Bukit Kiara. It flows southwest through suburban areas such as Desa Sakti, Kampung Sungai Penchala, and Taman Tun Dr. Ismail before joining Sungai Damansara, a key tributary of the Klang River Basin.

The catchment can be categorised by a mix of dense residential, commercial and industrial land use. Unfortunately, there has been cases of river water pollution, highlighting the need for conservation efforts.

To address this, the Global Environment Centre (GEC) has partnered with OSK Foundation to empower local communities, schools, businesses and the general public. Additionally, a pollution mitigation action plan at selected premises will be implemented to minimise the impact on Sungai Kayu Ara and contribute to river conservation.

Objectives
  • To assess Sg Kayu Ara catchment through rapid assessment;
  • To create awareness through consultations, talks, training, workshops and materials for targeted stakeholders; and
  • To support key river initiatives for trained stakeholders.
Key Activities
  • Project and stakeholder consultation.
  • Rapid Environmental Assessment.
  • Outreach events in shopping mall.
  • Training/Capacity building.
  • Implementation of pollution control initiatives and key river care initiatives in PPR Flat Lembah Subang 1 and schools.
  • Development of visibility and awareness materials.
  • Organise public events.
