About 61% of the 250 km of Perak’s coastline is under threats of coastal erosion due to the increase of sea levels and frequent storms that are linked to the alarming climate change. This project embarks on a journey to conserve mangrove areas at Kuala Gula, Kerian and Lekir, Manjung in Perak.
The conservation initiatives include mangrove tree planting and maintenance by the local community, establishment/enhancement of sustainable livelihood programmes benefiting approximately 7,000 communities. These initiatives are hoped to improve the quality of the coastline through natural protection and slow down the coastal erosions.
Aim/objective:
This programme focuses on:
- Strengthening the sustainable management of mangrove and coastal resources;
- Enhancing sustainable use of mangrove and coastal resources to improve the community’s livelihood; and
- Strengthening the institutional capacity of the 2-local community organisations for mangrove and coastal resources management towards sustainability.
Achievement:
On March 9 and 10, 2023, Global Environment Centre (GEC) and Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) together with Sahabat Hutan Bakau Pasir Panjang Laut (SHBPPL) and Sahabat Hutan Bakau Kuala Gula (SHBKG) organised a closing event to mark the successful implementation of the project. Overall, a total of 22,500 mangrove trees were successfully planted in Kuala Gula and Pasir Panjang Laut. The communities have also been empowered to produce mangrove plant-based beverage products, namely Mangroovist and Coolega; produced from two locally-grown mangrove species, Berembang fruit and Jeruju leaf extract.
