Recovery Project: Conservation of Southeast-portion of Pekan Forest Reserve

The project supports the conservation and rehabilitation of 4,800 hectares (ha) of forested and degraded peatland within the Pekan Forest Reserve and its buffer zone. It intends to complement and support the proposed landscape-wide sustainable management programme for the Southeast Pahang Peatland Landscape.

Objectives:

To enhance the prevention of fires and the conservation of peatlands in Pekan Forest Reserve and its buffer zone that are adjacent to YPPH Bebar Utara, Pekan Barat and Pekan Timur estates.

Key Activities: 

    • Rewetting through canal blocking activities.
    • Restoration activities through revegetation, which is tree planting.
    • Monitoring and patrolling programmes with both local community and estate personnel.
    • Preparation for firefighting activities.
    • Wildlife monitoring within the recovery project landscape.

Key achievements:

    • Rewetting and enhanced natural regeneration on more than 1,000ha of degraded peatland
    • Active fire prevention through rewetting and regular community patrolling
    • Strengthened local preparedness and early response to control peat fires
    • Broad community and stakeholder engagement and outreach
    • Improved wildlife habitat and species conservation
    • Enhanced monitoring of fire risk and wildlife presence
    • Strengthened stakeholder collaboration for integrated management
