Community-based Peatland Fire Prevention in Southeast Pahang Peatland Landscape (SEPPL)

Community-based Peatland Fire Prevention in Southeast Pahang Peatland Landscape (SEPPL)

This project focuses on fire monitoring and prevention in the Southeast Pahang Peatland Landscape (SEPPL) through community-based approaches. Key activities include fire patrols by local communities, distribution of firefighting tools and materials to help extinguish small-scale peat fires within villages, and preventing the spread of fire to nearby settlements and forest reserves.

The project also involves installing monitoring tools such as Fire Danger Rating System (FDRS) signboards and water level markers to indicate fire risks in participating villages. In addition, daily updates on weather conditions, fire risk levels, and hotspot alerts will be shared to improve preparedness.

Another key objective is to enhance fire awareness among local communities, particularly to reduce fire incidents caused by land clearing for agriculture—especially with the increased fire risk expected during the upcoming El Niño season.

Objectives:

To support the protection of peatland ecosystem within SEPPL by conducting fire monitoring and awareness activities with the local Orang Asli communities.

Key Activities:

    • Community-based fire prevention and monitoring.
    • Enhance protection on peatland landscape in Southeast Pahang habitat.
    • Improve community awareness knowledge on peatland fire risk or hazard.

Key Outcomes:

    • Reduce the numbers of fire occurrence in the villages in SEPPL.
    • Prevent fire from spreading into forest reserve.
    • Communities stop burning activities for land opening.
