Enhancing Local Action and Community Participation in Disaster Preparedness and Response

This project addresses the increasing risks of flooding caused by climate change and the expansion of human settlements in flood-prone areas. It aims to build community resilience to disasters, particularly floods, by promoting the adoption of best management practices and enhancing local capacities.

Key components include training communities in town-watching exercises to develop community-based flood hazard maps, establishing straightforward procedures and localized training for disaster preparedness, and creating adaptive Training of Trainers (ToT) modules tailored for practical application at the community level.

Through these efforts, the project seeks to empower communities with the knowledge and tools needed to prepare for and mitigate the impacts of flooding effectively.

Objectives

To form SMART partnership and establish platform to empower the communities with the knowledge and skill to create awareness on environment and impact of climate change that leads to action.
To mitigate impact of climate disaster with actions that promotes environment protections and safeguarding community well beings.
To outreach and share importance of environment management, best management practices, local actions and community participation in disaster preparedness and response to a wider community group.

Key Activities

Consultations with identified stakeholders from flood-prone states and form a Project Working Group.
Organise awareness talks including a series of webinars.
Develop handy and informative materials focused on flood management.
Centralised Training of Trainers (ToT) for identified local communities on flood disaster management.
Develop Community-based Flood Hazard Map (CBFHM) with selected communities to enhance flood preparedness.
Provide continuous guidance to the communities and encourage them to initiate their own localised site-based activities.
Organise a sharing session with local communities involved to exchange and share experience.
Disseminate finalised CBFHM to local communities and public amenities.
