Sungai Penchala River Education Programme

Sungai Penchala River Education Programme is the expansion of Sungai Way W.A.T.E.R Project (Working Actively through Education and Rehabilitation) which began in 2007. Sungai Penchala is about 14km long with about 4km of it located within the jurisdiction of DBKL. It runs through urban area, industrial and residential area within Petaling Jaya before flowing into the infamous Klang River.

Target groups:

Local communities in Penchala River Basin, educational institution and business community

Aim/objective:

The objective of this programme was to protect and enhance Sg Penchala, urban river through local community engagement. In addition, the programme aims to promote and support local community, school, bussiness and other stakeholders’ localised initiatives, as well as outreaching larger target groups through Mobile River Care Unit – a mobile river care education programme.

Summary of Project Achievements:

Support given by SPARK Foundation via  W.A.T.E.R project has enable GEC to train and empower 16 community groups to monitor their local waterways and inspired three community groups from Desa Mentari Block 3 Resident Associates, Taman Tun Dr Ismail Resident Associates and Section 14 Petaling Jaya Resident Associates to take a step further to expand their existing initiatives to cover bigger scope and outreach to wider audiences. Using GEC’s very own river education module entitles RIVER Ranger,  82 students and educators were trained on river auditing and monitoring. On 27th March 2017, Waste Segregation Initiative and Oil & Grease Trap for SS2 Food Court was launched in conjunction with World Water Day celebration.

Seventy – six food operators took part in this initiative to reduce amount of waste generated and stormdrain pollution. GEC is also working with a few youth groups such as Urban Hijau, a social enterprise involved in permaculture, to inspire them to adopt water conservation initiatives such as rain water harvesting for their urban farming garden. Other activities undertaken through this programme include river restoration at the source of Penchala River, water quality and aquatic invertebrate study, and organising river walk activities along the upstream of Penchala River.
