Vita Tenggara Conservation Project: A Corporate-Community Partnership For Sustainable Ecosystems

The Vita Tenggara Conservation Project is a collaborative initiative between Berinda Group, PPB Group and Global Environment Centre (as programme implementation agency) to transform the areas that initially designated for bungalow lots, to a thriving conservation area that enhances the water catchment basin near Lebam Dam, protects local flora and fauna and showcases corporate environmental stewardship.

By integrating reforestation, biodiversity conservation and community engagement, this initiative will strengthen climate resilience and empower local communities through conservation-based livelihood opportunities. The project adopts a holistic approach, community-cantered approach, combining scientific assessments, habitat restoration and local ecological knowledge to ensure long-term sustainability.

Key component of the project is the active community participation through established community-based organisations (CBOs) including Sahabat Hutan Bakau Pulau Tanjung Surat and Kelab Komuniti Pelindung Alam Sekitar Mersing (KOMPAS). They play vital role in leading rehabilitation efforts, ensuring that conservation activities create sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.

By fostering Corporate-CSO partnerships and aligning with global environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals, the project aims to be a replicable model for balancing conservation with development.

Objectives

a) Enhance biodiversity through native species reforestation and wildlife corridor establishment;
b) Improve water quality and regulate flow in the lake area;
c) Increase climate resilience through microclimate regulation;
d) Empower local communities through conservation-based livelihood opportunities; and
e) Establish Berinda Group and PPB as leaders in private sector-led conservation.

Key Activities
  • Rapid site assessment for biodiversity, ecosystem health, and wildlife corridors.
  • Restore degraded forest areas through native fruit tree planting.
  • Support lake conservation by preventing erosion and monitoring water quality.
  • Engage local communities and schools in conservation education.
  • Establish long-term research and monitoring for ecological restoration.
Expected Outcomes
  • Increased presence and diversity of native flora and fauna.
  • Improved microclimate regulation and climate resilience.
