YSD-MoF Matching Grant 2025: Empowering Communities for Mangrove Conservation and Climate Resilience in Johor, Perak and Selangor

The Global Environment Centre (GEC) has been successfully implementing YSD-funded mangrove conservation projects using community-based approaches in Peninsular Malaysia. Building on these achievements, this matching grant enhances and intensifies specific project components during 2025.

The project strategically targets three key areas: expanding mangrove planting, enhancing community training and strengthening educational outreach across existing project sites in Johor, Perak, and Selangor, working through established community partnerships.

It focuses on planting 21,000 additional mangrove trees while strengthening local capacity and promoting climate resilience through enhanced educational outreach and sustainable management practices.

The project directly supports multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 17) while contributing to national mangrove restoration goals and the National 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign. Target beneficiaries include B40 families, local communities, students and marginalised groups across coastal areas dependent on mangrove ecosystems.

Key Activities

Activity 1: Strengthening Sustainable Mangrove and Coastal Resource Management (Jan-Mar 2025)

  • Engage community groups, stakeholders and government agencies through targeted meetings and workshops.
  • Conduct comprehensive site visits and field assessments to evaluate planting sites.
  • Organise networking forums to facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Activity 2: Community Participation in Mangrove Rehabilitation and Protection (Mar-Aug 2025)

  • Plant 20,000 additional mangrove trees across four strategic sites:
    > Johor: Parit Kassim (5,000 trees) by the KKBPJ members;
    > Perak: Kuala Gula (5,000 trees) by the SHBKG members and Pasir Panjang Laut (5,000 trees) by the SHBPPL;  and
    > Selangor: Tebuk Mendeleng (6,000 trees) through SHBKDH.
  • Conduct field-based training for community members on advanced mangrove rehabilitation techniques.
  • Rehabilitate 10 hectares of degraded mangrove areas.

Activity 3: Promoting Climate Change Adaptation through Public Participation (Apr-Dec 2025)

  • Develop and implement comprehensive mangrove awareness programmes for students and the public.
  • Double the student participation to 200 students per school across four target schools.
  • Organise educational workshops on climate change impacts and adaptation strategies.
  • Facilitate peer-learning activities among community-based organisations.
  • Conduct Mangrove Carnival activities to increase public awareness.
