Community-based Mangrove Conservation in Buruk Bakul Village, Indonesia & Mekong Delta, Viet Nam

Aramco has teamed up with Global Environment Centre (GEC) and its partners, Yayasan Gambut and Centre for Environmental Science and Ecology (CESE) to engage and empower the local communities in the rehabilitation and conservation of mangroves to achieve sustainable development.

Undertaken in the Buruk Bakal Village, Bengkalis District, Riau Province, Indonesia and Soc Trang Province in the Lower Mekong Delta, Viet Nam, both sites identified as highly degraded and in urgent need of attention and remedial action.

To kickstart the project, community mangrove nurseries will be established in both Buruk Bakul Village and Soc Trang Province to supply 8,000 and 15,000 mangrove seedlings respectively. After the seedlings have grown to a suitable size in the nurseries, they will be planted at the degraded mangrove areas.

Locations:

Riau Province, Indonesia

Implementation partner: Yayasan Gambut
Project site: Buruk Bakul Village.
Location: Bukit Batu Sub-District, Bengkalis District, Riau Province, Indonesia

Based on insights from Sekat Bakau Community Group, there are coastal erosion in mangrove areas of Buruk Bakul Village. If left unmitigated, further erosion will consume the land of the village.

Lower Mekong Delta, Viet Nam

Implementation partner: Center for Environmental Science & Ecology
Project site: Vinh Binh commune, Vinh Chau District
Location: Soc Trang province, Lower Mekong Delta, Viet Nam

Mangrove ecosystems in coastal areas of this province are threatened by coastal erosion, anthropogenic impacts, sea level rise and other consequences of global climate change.

Key Activities:

  • Establishment of community mangrove nursery to supply mangrove trees stocks.
  • Construction of wave breaker in Indonesia, to control erosion and tidal flow pressure .
  • Organise mangrove tree planting with involvement of the local community and stakeholders.
  • Support the mangrove monitoring, maintenance, and protection.
  • Organise capacity building training for selected community groups.
  • Organise peer learning visit.
