The Walk4Trees is a programme funded by Yayasan PETRONAS mainly aims to make positive impacts towards employees’ health and support PETRONAS’ sustainability agenda through a nationwide tree planting initiative.
The programme is supporting the community-based rehabilitation efforts through tree planting activities at degraded areas in Permanent Forest Reserves or protected areas by the authorities. For tree planting activities under the programme, GEC has been appointed to manage the overall coordination of planting trees at degraded sites in 11 states in Malaysia.
Phase 1 – To plant 30,000 tree saplings with local communities at 9 sites in 6 states (Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, Penang, Perak, and Selangor)
Phase 2 – To plant 20,000 tree saplings with PETRONAS employees and local communities at 9 sites in 9 states (Kedah, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Melaka, Pahang, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor and Terengganu)
Objectives:
- To conserve the environment by planting 50,000 trees with 70% survival rate within the next three years.
- To contribute to carbon sequestration by establishing carbon sinks in the form of mangroves, dipterocarps and indigenous species.
- To enable communities in the selected areas to either start or expand nurseries for tree-planting, which in turn, would improve their livelihood.
Project Activities:
- Collected, sown and raised seedlings at 14 community nurseries (Click HERE for photos)
- Planted 57,545 trees across 11 states in Malaysia at 14 sites.
- Fire prevention and water management at Raja Musa Forest Reserve (RMFR):
⇒ Seven (7) community members participated and completed the construction of four (4) units of canal blocks to prevent outflow of peatland water, rewet the area and prevent fire (degraded and drained peatlands are prone to forest fires).
⇒ Selected, trained and appointed local community patrollers to monitor peat water table (Click HERE to find out why) and to detect any form of encroachment, wildlife hunting and peatland fire occurrences. - Community benefits: the project rewards the local communities who are involved in the establishment of community nurseries, collecting and raising seedlings and planting trees at degrades sites as well as monitoring and patrolling the area.
- Event: GEC in collaboration with Melaka Water Regulatory Authority (BKSA) organised a peer-learning visit with local community of Kampung Ayer Pasir, Melaka to Kampung Orang Asli Pulau Kempas, GEC-Community Sustainable Peatland Centre (GEC-CoSPeC) and Raja Musa Forest Reserve from 23 to 24 October 2021. More info HERE.
- Event: GEC together with Yayasan PETRONAS (YP), Badan Kawal Selia Air (BKSA) Melaka and Kg Ayer Pasir community, planted 150 trees during YP’s Tree Planting Programme “PETRONAS Walk4Trees” event at Durian Tunggal Water Catchment in Malacca on 27 February 2022. (Click HERE for photos)
- Event: Yayasan PETRONAS and GEC hosted a tree planting event on 13 August 2022 at RMFR to commemorate the programme’s milestone of planting 57,545 trees. (Click HERE for photos)
