Conservation of Mangroves in Pak Nam Sub-District, Satun Province, Thailand

This project is funded by Aramco Asia Singapore and implemented by the Global Environment Centre in partnership with Thai Sea Watch Association (TSWA).

The Satun mangroves in Pak Nam Sub-District are facing various threats including land conversion for development, over-harvesting of mangrove resources and environmental degradation with an annual loss rate of up to 2% per year. These threats are causing loss of biodiversity, reduced coastal protection and increased climate vulnerability.

To address these challenges, GEC partners with the Thai Sea Watch Association (TSWA) to restore the degraded mangroves while empowering local communities through sustainable conservation practices.

Objectives:

Restore 3-4 hectares of mangrove forest
Establish community-based conservation programme
Build local capacity for long-term management
Develop alternative livelihoods linked to conservation

Key Activities:

Establish a community mangrove nursery producing up to 8,000 seedlings
Restore 3–4 hectares of mangrove forest with planting 8,000 trees
Strengthen local capacity through community training programmes
Foster regional collaboration through cross-border knowledge exchanges

Participation of Friends of North Selangor Peatland Forest in Peat Water Management and Forest Rehabilitation Adjacent to Raja Musa Forest Reserve

This project has resulted in the establishment of a local community group who are aware and concerned about the peat swamp forest degradation issues called Friends of North Selangor Peat Swamp Forest (FNSPSF); and development of peatland environmental education programme called Peatland Forest Ranger, to educate school children on the importance of environmental protection on peat swamp forest.

Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve Fire Prevention Initiatives

Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve is a 960 ha area of peat swamp forest. It supports the conservation of rare species of flora and fauna and has significant importance to local community and indigenous that have loved in the area and harvested its resources for many years. In 2014, more than 350 ha of the forest got burnt during the dry season.

Transforming Temuan Communities Through Culture, Indigenous Village Cooperative (IVC) and Ecological Knowledge for Sustainable Prosperity

This is the third phase of a multi-phase community development initiative with the Temuan communities in Kampung Orang Asli Pulau Kempas and Bukit Cheeding. This phase aims to transform the community into a self-sustaining entity capable of independently driving and managing its own socioeconomic development initiatives with only minimal guidance and support from GEC.

Partnership in Conservation and Rehabilitation of North Selangor Peat Swamp Forest – Phase 2

The project aimed to conserve and support ongoing rehabilitation of 50 hectares of degraded areas in Forest Compartment 32 and 70 of Raja Musa Forest Reserve. The project directly addresses one of Sime Darby Foundation’s key priorities – namely the protection and preservation of the high conservation value ecosystem is protected.
