Western Pacific Sustainable Peatland Management (SAGU) Project – Malaysia Component

The Western Pacific Sustainable Peatland Management (SAGU) Project aims to reduce peatland degradation and loss across Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. Through peatland conservation, restoration and sustainable management, the project supports climate mitigation, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development priorities.

In Malaysia, GEC has been appointed as the consortium partner to implement the project across landscapes in Sabah and Sarawak of Borneo.

Through these landscapes, the Malaysia component aims to strengthen both upland and lowland peatland conservation and sustainable management while supporting climate resilience, biodiversity protection and the livelihoods of communities dependent on peatland ecosystems in Borneo.

Key Stakeholders

Federal:

  • Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES)

Sabah:

  • Sabah Natural Resource Office (NRO)
  • Sabah Forestry Department (SFD)
  • Other technical agencies supporting in peatland management

Sarawak:

  • Economic Planning Unit (EPU)
  • Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development (MUDeNR)
  • Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC)
  • Other technical agencies supporting in peatland management
Key Objectives

Reduce degradation and loss of peatland ecosystems in lowland and upland landscapes of Sabah and Sarawak in response to climate change:

  1. Peatland data is improved; policy, planning and monitoring for peatland conservation, protection and restoration are strengthened in national and subnational levels.
  2. Peatland conservation education, outreach and training are expanded through improved institutional structures and processes including exchanges across peatland landscapes.
  3. Local residents participated in management measures to protect intact peatlands, and degraded peatlands are restored.
Project Activities and Contributions in Malaysia
  • Improve upland peatland mapping and support the development and implementation of State Action Plans on Peatlands (SAPP) in Sabah and Sarawak.
  • Support integrated landscape management planning at three critical lowland and upland sites.
  • Improve fire management practices and build knowledge and capacities at local community levels.
  • Support the finalisation and implementation of the National Action Plan on Peatlands 2026–2035.
  • Support communities that are fully depend on peatlands for their livelihoods and other stakeholders.
