Biodiversity Conservation and Protection of Targeted Peat Swamp Forests in Malaysia

This project builds on a project implemented by GEC and supported by the Synchronicity Earth in Southeast Pahang and Gunung Arong Forest Reserve in Johor. The earlier project successfully confirmed the presence of several rare and endemic blackwater fish, as well as rare threatened and endangered mammal species.

The project will continue biodiversity monitoring, peatland assessments and conservation efforts at these sites, while expanding activities to the Southern Terengganu Peatlands and western Sabah.

Project Focus

The project aims to strengthen biodiversity knowledge by documenting blackwater fish and other wildlife through fish surveys, camera trapping and direct observations. It also supports community-based peatland conservation and restoration in targeted peat swamp forests.

Key Activities
  1. Continue to compile biodiversity information in project sites across Johor, Pahang, and Sabah.
  2. Identify and conduct sampling of fish diversity in the blackwater habitats of KPPL, Sabah.
  3. Install camera traps to monitor wildlife at selected locations.
  4. Support community-based peatland protection and rehabilitation initiatives through:
    • Fire prevention patrolling;
    • Blocking of peat drainage canals;
    • Rewetting of peatlands (where needed);
    • Promoting sustainable fishing techniques; and
    • Empowering community in monitoring and reporting.
  5. Linking to conservation strategies based on and/or in Southern Terengganu
