Integrating Biodiversity Monitoring, Forest Restoration, and Wildlife Action Planning in Smallholder Landscapes Adjacent to Peat Swamp Forest Reserves within the Klias Peninsula Peatland Landscape (KPPL), Sabah

The Klias Peninsula Peatland Landscape (KPPL) contains three peatland forest reserves (FR), namely Binsuluk FR, Klias FR and Padas Damit FR, in north-western Sabah.

KPPL is one of the most important peatland landscapes, rich in biodiversity and serves as a habitat for various species of wildlife. It also plays an important role in maintaining the balance of local ecosystems, water regulation and connectivity between habitats. However, these reserves are under increasing pressure due to surrounding human activities, which disturb the habitats and fragment wildlife corridors.

This project is designed as a two-year, phased conservation project, aims to continue and expand biodiversity monitoring and ecological restoration in Forest Reserves and nearby smallholders’ land within the KPPL. It builds on the previous rapid biodiversity assessment initiative funded by MPOGCF and focuses on two main components:

    • Biodiversity Monitoring Using Camera Traps
    • Forest Restoration in Binsuluk Forest Reserve
Aims:
  • Strengthen biodiversity monitoring coverage within the forest reserves.
  • Expand camera trap deployment deeper into Binsuluk and Klias Forest Reserves.
  • Maintain existing monitoring sites along forest boundaries and smallholder areas.
  • Restore degraded peat swamp forest by planting 3,000 native tree seedlings.
  • Enhance community participation in restoration and fire prevention activities to ensure local stewardship of conservation efforts.
Key Activities:
  • Biodiversity monitoring through camera traps
      • Deploy cameras
      • Data collection
      • Analysis and reporting
  • Forest restoration initiatives
      • Engagement with stakeholders
      • Site preparation and procurement
      • Planting of 3,000 native trees to accelerate habitat recovery
      • Maintenance
Stakeholders:
  • Sabah Biodiversity Centre (SaBC)
  • Sabah Forestry Department
  • Sabah Wildlife Department
  • Sahabat Gambut Semenanjung Klias
  • Private Oil Palm Estate
