Conservation of Peat Swamp Forest Fish Species in Southeast Pahang and Johor State, Malaysia

Project conducted for assessment fish diversity in Southeast Pahang Peat Swamp Forest and newly documented area in eastern Johor State. The project will support the conservation of endangered black-water fish species and to support habitat protection and restoration. This study is also a valuable tool to support and guide the sustainable management of peatland landscape.

Aim/Objectives: To undertake a rapid assessment of black-water fish species in targeted sites along with development initial strategy to enhance protection of black-water fish species.

Key Activities: 

    • Fish assessment in SEPPSF, Pahang
    • Fish assessment in Gunung Arong, Mersing, Johor

Key Outcomes:

    • Identified various species of blackwater fishes to be updated in inventory of Pahang State Forestry Department
    • Possible new findings on the endangered species of betta species.
