Conservation of Peat Swamp Forest Fish Species in Southeast Pahang and Johor State, Malaysia

The project was conducted to assess fish diversity in the Southeast Pahang Peat Swamp Forest and a newly documented area in eastern Johor. It supports the conservation of endangered blackwater fish species and contributes to habitat protection and restoration efforts.

This study also serves as a valuable tool to guide the sustainable management of the peatland landscape.

Objectives:

To undertake a rapid assessment of black-water fish species in targeted sites along with development initial strategy to enhance protection of black-water fish species.

Key Activities: 

    • Fish assessment in SEPPSF, Pahang.
    • Fish assessment in Gunung Arong, Mersing, Johor.

Key Outcomes:

    • Identified various species of blackwater fishes to be updated in the Pahang State Forestry Department inventory.
    • Possible new findings on the endangered species of betta species.
