Empowering Community livelihood in Upper Kinta Basin as part of post Covid-19 MCO Strategy

The implementation of Movement Control Order (MCO) to curb COVID-19 outbreak has affected the targeted communities badly. The Orang Asli communities depend on daily wages as well as forest foraging for their survival as well as many of the peri-urban community in Klebang Selatan work in daily paid activities such as own business, sewing, contract works, construction labour and etc.

The project is conducted under the Hasanah Special Grant 2020 (HSG2020) aims to improve the economy of and create alternative livelihood for peri-urban and urban communities located within Upper Kinta Basin post-COVID-19 pandemic especially in Orang Asli villages and peri-urban communities near Tanjung Rambutan in Perak.

First Phase (2020 - 2021)

Objective:

  • To improve and create immediate alternative livelihoods among Orang Asli located within Upper Kinta Basin.
  • To improve and create alternative livelihood for per-urban communities located within Upper Kinta Basin.
  • To create a synergy between per-urban/urban communities and Orang Asli for environmental-related economic activities.

Project Output:

  • Construction of eco-trail with the Orang Asli communities is completed but yet opened to the public.
    The eco-trail will be the new hiking trail up to Mount Korbu with starting point being at the Orang Asli Kampung Makmur, creating livelihood opportunities for the locals when tourists come for the hiking activities. Besides that, by engaging the local OA communities in the construction works of the eco-trail, they have earned additional income from it.
  • Orang Asli community from Kg Tonggang has already started preparation on outdoor recreational space and established a corporation named “Koperasi Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Tanggong Berhad”.
  • Established KRT Klebang Selatan Tapioca Chips Processing and Selling Centre which was launched by the Mayor of Ipoh, Dato’ Haji Rumaizi bin Baharin @ Md Daud. It is a food production initiative managed by the community group especially B40 communities at Klebang Selatan to support their livelihood.
  • The Centre also act as a One Stop Centre (OSC) platform for urban farming, processing and marketing of community food products. The KRT Klebang Selatan has published their own Tapioca Chips Facebook page and their product being sold at a petrol station in Bercham, Ipoh.
Second Phase (2021 - 2023)

Key Activities:

  • Establishment of Sg Seno’oi River Open Classroom.
  • Implementation of the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) education program initiative.
  • Formal setup/registration of KRT Klebang Selatan community organisation for the One Stop Centre (OSC).
  • Promoting green initiatives through reducing the use of single-use plastics.
  • Establishment of a green community garden with KRT Klebang Selatan.
  • Establishment of urban farming through vertical garden concept within Upper Kinta Basin.
  • Enhancing hiking eco-trail at Mount Korbu.
  • Conduct training for 10 OA community members as porters or tour guides in partnership with the Forestry Department.
  • Completing Mountain Bike eco-trail facility near Kampung Tonggang.
  • Construct facilities such as mini chalets, mini hut, parking area and etc. near Seno’oi River.
